Piet Mondrian Inspired Artworks

Room 6 have been learning about fractions in Maths. While searching for a way to incorporate maths with art we came across and were inspired by a famous Dutch Artist Piet Mondrian.

We divided our paper into all the same sized units then we used whole, halves and quarters to paint certain colours. We learnt about and painted the three primary colours, red, yellow and blue and we also used the shade, black and the tint, white.

We used padlet to write up our success criteria and discussed with a partner how well we achieved it.
We hope you enjoy our art.

The Battleship

A story written by Jackson on an initial experience we created at school.

Room 6 from Auroa school went on a cruise ship to the island of DOOM!
We waved to our family good bye. After we got on the ship we started sun bathing in the oven, hot sun. It was so relaxing.
Suddenly we all woke up, shocked. We all looked up and we saw a treacherous cloud and it started to rain heavily. The ship started to go into a storm. We were terrified because we were close to the island of doom. There was lots of lightning and we were TERRIFIED! Suddenly a HUGE wave came over our ship. SPLASH! A tremendous water bomb went all over the ship. We had arrived at the island of DOOM!
We stepped off the ship terrified. Zombie pigs pound onto us. I got out my machine-gun and shot them down. 20 crazy bazooka monsters shot down the ship. We all panicked. Suddenly we were surrounded by ufo’s, crazy bazooka monsters, aliens, zombie pig men, zombies and magma elementals. We were terrified of those vicious creatures. We suddenly got out our shovels and dug under the vicious creatures onto the beach. They started chasing us. I found some speed boats and we took off like bullets back to the harbor.

iPads in Maths with Padlet

Room 6 have been focusing on Fractions over the past week. Today we worked with various equipment to show each other what we had learnt about Fractions. We took photos of our work with the iPads. We then created a page with photos and text, in Pic Collage, then we inserted our Fraction work into Padlet, to show everyone.

Screen shot of whole wall.

We had a lot of fun!
Have a great evening.

Paige's First Movie

Emily from Room 1 has been teaching some of Room 6 students how to make movies. Check out Paige's movie below then view Emily's blog for more student movies and other great stuff!

Have a great evening,

Come and See Our School!

We have been working really hard on our writing over the last few weeks completing various projects.
One of them is about our school.

We decided that we would like to show visitors around our school through our blog, as it isn't always possible to actually come and visit us. So we brainstormed all the things we wanted to showcase about our school.

We came up with five areas. The library, our hall, the playground and dell, the backfield, courts and pool, and our classroom.

We got into pairs and wrote what was so special about those areas.
We created a storyboard with pictures so we knew what we would say. We then used the storyboard as a guide and went and took photos of our special area. We also took photos of each other. We then practiced and practiced how and what we were going to say. We learned to speak clearly, not to ruffle our storyboard as we read, and to project our voice.
Finally we completed our work in the app, Puppet Pals.

We hope you enjoy the special parts of our school!

Fun Fractions

We have been refreshing our learning on fractions in Room 6. We wanted to look at fractions in everyday use.
We looked at half today, used the symbol 1/2 and produced all these halves.
We looked at our lunch and found food cut in halves and also we cut some food in half.

We produced halves from blocks. We used clay to make a half.

We discussed having 1 out of 2 scoops of chocolate on our ice cream cone.

We used an app 'Pizza 1' to practice our fractions,

and we made half with our paper and paint pizzas.

Can you make halves at home?
Take a photo and check out Room 8's blog to learn how to post it so everyone can see.

One of Room 6's reading groups have been looking at a range of Spider texts, looking at specific information and summarising it in their own words.
The students then used the information from the text to present a Pic Collage poster of facts on Spiders.
Well done to Tiani and Paige who have completed their work.
