Neville the Nasty Rat in Room 5!

We have had a nasty, unwanted visitor to our room this week!
He walked in through the side door and waltzed right into our class while we were working.

We called him Neville the naughty rat.

After days of eaten glue sticks, missing headphones, chewed pencils and chomped whiteboard pens, Mrs Ericsson spotted him in the corner of our room. It was time to take action.

Mrs Ericsson decided to call in the Rat team consisting of Mr Bloor, Mrs Auld, Mrs Symes and Mrs Ericsson. We went outside to play.

We armed ourselves and with a few squeals and screams of excitement we no longer have an unwanted rat in our room.

Well done Team Rat!

We decided to write poetry to share our excitement of having this
wonderfully, crazy, unwanted guest in our room.

These are our cinquain poems.

Each poem must contain:
2 syallbles
4 syllables
6 syllables
8 syllables
2 syllables

Star of the Week....Georgia!

Georgia has been using all the school values R.E.S.P.E.C.T this week.
I am so proud of her for taking responsibility for her own learning, helping others and been a fabulous role model!

What do you think our School Mascot 'Piri the Pukeko', thinks of the hard work Georgia has been doing?

Mihi Art in Room 5

Room 5 have been working on our Mihi Art

We wrote it on a Google Doc then printed it with our photo onto our artwork.
We decided to paint our Maunga to represent the mountain in our Mihi.

We used the elements of art to construct our artwork. First we practiced our line marking, thick, thin, light, dark. We then enlarged our drawings and hand drew them with pencil onto watercolour paper. We drew in all the dark and light areas we could see on our Maunga. We used cool colours (green, purple and blue) to paint the mountain then when it was dry we used warm colours (red, orange, yellow) to paint the sky.

We think they look AMAZING!!!

Kiwi Swim Safe Safety in the Water Room 5

Yesterday Room 5 were lucky enough to have special instruction on safety
in the water provided by Swim Safe New Zealand.

We talked about how important it is to have the right fit life jacket.
This shows a life jacket that is too big. It must fit tight so you can not fall out of it in the water and it can keep you afloat properly.

This one fits much better. You should not be able to put your finger behind the clip
because it is so tight around the waist.

When we are in the water we lose a lot of heat so we must get in a huddle to keep warm with other people if possible. Arms go around the waist to keep head above the water.

After forming a huddle we break one place in the chain to form a line in the water. DO NOT PANIC!

This is the H.E.L.P position.
If we are on our own, we hug our chest when we are in the water to keep warm
so to lose the least amount of heat.

The H.E.L.P position.

The HUDDLE line position, floating on our back and kicking.

Here we stay as a huddle, not touch the pool floor and get from one end of the pool to the other.
This was a lot of fun!

Floating with our buddies.

Thank you Swim Safe New Zealand for providing us with this valuable and life saving experience.

Do you have swim safe lessons at your school?

Can you summarise the main points from this swim safe lesson?
